Cleaning, Maintaining Your Firearm, Internet Training

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CLEANING FOR YOUR FIREARM - There are three different types (levels) of cleaning. The student must understand that he/she is should be the ONLY individual to perform Type 1 Cleaning

TYPE 1 CLEANING - Type 1 Cleaning involves limited disassembly, usually to field-stripping, This type of cleaning removes the residue of lead or jacket fouling and the deposits of burnt and unburnt powder that build up during firing, and then applies light lubrication. Type 1 Cleaning should be performed as soon as possible after firing, and even when the firearm has not been fired, it should be inspected periodically and cleaned when necessary.

TYPE 2 CLEANING - This type of cleaning involves the complete disassembly of the firearm.. The parts are then cleaned, inspected, lubricated as required and reassembled.

Manufacturers Recommendation For How Often - The Type 2 Cleaning may/should be performed depending on the manufacturer's recommendation. Not Recommend For Students.

Immersion In Water - If a firearm has been immersed in water, it must be given a Type 2 Cleaning within 8 to 10 hours of the immersion. A Type 2 Cleaning should also be done if the firearm is exposed to excessive entrance of dirt, mud, sand, etc. into the mechanism.

TYPE 3 CLEANING - This prepares the firearm for long term storage or removes the firearms from storage and places it back into service. The manufactures recommendations should be followed.

NOTE: Ammunition - DO NOT Put Lubricants on Cartridges - DO NOT spray or wipe lubricants on cartridges which can cause the primer to go dead (although primers are sealed in modern cartridges).

Safe Gun Cleaning Procedures

The goal of safe cleaning procedures is to SEPARATE THE AMMUNITION FROM THE FIREARMS AND THE CLEANING ROOM/AREA and to make students understand that the muzzles are still POINTED IN THE SAFEST DIRECTION during the procedures even though the firearms are unloaded. 1. UNLOAD AND CHECK IT TWICE - Unload the firearm(s) and all magazines/speedloaders and check both Visually & Physically to make sure ALL the ammunition has been unloaded.
2. AMMUNITION IN CONTAINER AND REMOVE IT FROM THE CLEANING AREA (Out of the Room/Area) - Put ALL ammunition into a container and put the container in a separate room/area from which you intend to conduct the cleaning.
Safe Cleaning Procedures
3. RECHECK UNLOADED CONDITION AGAIN (CIT) - BEFORE STARTING, check the firearm(s) and all magazines/speedloaders AGAIN, both Visually & Physically, to make sure they are UNLOADED. 4. PROCEED WITH CLEANING - Now, PROCEED with your cleaning steps. NOTE: Safest Direction - Even though UNLOADED, direct the muzzle in the safest direction - before disassembly and after reassembly, and during the function check. The wall you direct the muzzle towards he "safest direction" which is the direction that, if an unintentional discharge did occur, would result in only minor property damage and NO injury.
