Always verify that the investigator is licensed.  The Division of Licensing in the state which the investigation agency operates can confirm this information. Normally you can find this information on the internet.

Always request a client contract.  This contract is confidential.  Identify the financial costs you are willing pay.  Also list all specific or general work the investigators are required to conduct.

In writing, clearly state your objectives and evidence that you require.  Before the start of the investigation, most client contracts require the surveillance dates, times, locations and suspect’s identity.

If you’re hiring an investigator for surveillance insist the detective video a local landmark for approx. five (5) seconds each hour.  This will confirm the investigators were on-site during the specified dates and locations.

The investigator may provide an oral or written report with the video evidence. If you require a written report you may be charged for the administrative time. Always inform the investigator of a secure mailing address.

Always insist on CONFIDENTIALITY in regards to your identity.  It is against the law for any investigator to release, sell or distribute this information to an unauthorized third party.

When you sign a client contract you are required to pay the investigation fees. Inquire if there may be addition fees to include, travel, parking or event fees.

Reliable agencies will never guarantee you results.  Most domestic investigations will require 3-4 days of surveillance to document the activities of a suspect.
