A private investigator or private detective (often shortened to PI or private eye) is a person who can be hired by individuals or groups to undertake investigatory law services.  Private detectives/investigators often work for individuals or attorneys in civil cases.

Pi's are also employed with private clients or insurance companies to investigate suspicious claims. Many private investigators are hired to search out evidence of adultery or other illegal conduct within marriage to establish grounds for a divorce.

Despite the need or legal necessity for such evidence in many civil cases according to press reports collecting evidence of adultery or other "bad behavior" by spouses and partners is still one of the frequent case assignments or activities investigators undertake, as the stakes being fought over now are child custody, alimony, or marital property disputes.

Surveillance is the monitoring of the behavior, activities, or other changing information, usually of people and often in a surreptitious manner. It most usually refers to observation of individuals or groups by licensed individuals or government organizations.

The word surveillance comes from the French word for "watching over"
